DOWNSTAIRS, AFTER ORDERING DESSERT from Angela, Perillo made a reservation for two people on Saturday night. “Give him a hefty discount and I’ll make up for it.”

Angela wrote it down in her reservation book. “You are full of surprises. I never thought a soft heart would be one of them.”

“Cara Angela, when was the last time you were in love?”

Angela laughed. “Who remembers?”

NICO REACHED OVER THE table and gave Daniele’s arm a squeeze. He cared for this young man, felt close to him. “Your feelings, don’t be afraid of them.”

“Afraid of what?” Perillo asked as he and OneWag reached the top of the stairs.

Daniele quickly stood up and walked across the room. “It’s my turn now,” he said as he took the tray with their desserts from his boss.

“Thanks, Dani. I got a plate of cantuccini for Rocco and you, Nico. Also, three glasses of vin santo on the house.” Perillo sat down as Daniele slid the tray on the table and distributed the plates. “So, afraid of what?”

Daniele threw a pleading look at Nico.

“Afraid we won’t solve the case,” Nico said.

Perillo looked up at his brigadiere. “Have faith, Dani. It might take a long time, but we will.”

“That reminds me,” Nico said, “have you talked to Beppe?”

“If he has something to tell me, he should come to the station. I’m not going to look for him. He’s probably only trying to give himself importance.”

“Maybe, but he still should be heard,” Nico said. “He won’t tell me. Beppe only wants to speak to the top man.”

“To waste my time. I heard you, Nico. We’ll put Beppe on the list of people to talk to.”

“I think you also need to talk further with the owner of the hotel,” Nico added. “She hired Cesare and Laura and might know something about them that we don’t.”

Perillo widened his eyes at Nico. “Me? You are part of my investigative team.”

“Why don’t I talk to her?” Daniele offered. The owner lived in Florence.

“No, Dani, I’m sorry. From the harsh look on her portrait hanging in the lobby of the hotel, Signora Lucchetti strikes me as a difficult woman.” She had sounded perfectly nice on the phone, but he wanted Nico to go. “Nico has years of experience behind him in getting people to reveal the contents of their closets or anyone else’s.” Perillo lifted a spoon and dug it into the panna cotta. “Let us put murder aside and enjoy our desserts. They will give us sweet dreams.”

Nico looked at the small glass of vin santo. Sweet dreams and acid reflux.
